Clifford Street Elementary School’s First Annual Jog-A-Thon races to raise fundsfor future garden while encouraging physical activity
What: Clifford’s First Annual Jog-A-Thon
Why: At a time when childhood obesity is at an all time high and budget cuts are threatening the loss of Clifford’s physical education program, Clifford Street Elementary School’s Panda PTO is going the extra mile by organizing Clifford’s First Annual Jog-A-Thon. An extension of Clifford’s Healthy Eating Initiative, the goal of the Jog-A-Thon is to encourage students to make healthy food choices and increase physical activity. Proceeds will help fund the Panda Reading and Edible Garden and additional materials needed to encourage healthy eating and physical activity.
When: June 1, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Who: Clifford Street Elementary School’s Panda PTO, parents, teachers, students and community. Clifford is a Title I, public, 2010 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Clifford recently won the Bronze Award from First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthier US School Challenge, participates in California Department of Public Health’s Network for a Healthy California and Harvest of the Month Club program, which works with LAUSD. One hundred percent of the school’s 180 students qualify for free lunch as part of the National School Lunch Program.

How: Thursday, May 24, 2012, is the official kickoff, followed by a pledge drive, then the Jog-A-Thon on June 1. Parents, students, teachers and community members are encouraged to participate. Clifford’s First Annual Jog-A-Thon will run throughout the school day. Those wishing to volunteer are encouraged to contact Nora Salem, Jog-A-Thon coordinator, at nnsalem@gmail.com.
Clifford’s First Annual Jog-A-Thon is rapidly approaching on June 1 and we need volunteers to make this event a fun, safe and exciting event for Clifford’s students. Parents can volunteer for their child’s class or help thoughout the day as water servers, wranglers, decorators or lap recorders or come to cheer on the students. Donations are also welcome. Chocolate anyone? Stop by the office today and purchase a box of ASSORTED chocolates to sell to your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Prizes include a pizza party if students sell one box, gift certificates and more! Funds go to student body and the PTO. Cost per box is $52 or you can purchase the chocolates individually. Our goal is to sell all of the chocolates!!!!
